Littleborough

Garden Dry Stone Wall

This garden dry stone wall project in Littleborough has been the most holistic and organic up to now. The initial brief was for the complete rebuild of the main boundary wall which encloses the garden on three sides. As that neared completion it became clear that the inner wall which hugs the flower border would also need a rebuild. So thats how it was.

The miniature inside wall is what most would consider as a feature all and in a way more straight forward to build. The stone for that was sourced from a neighbour less that half a mile down the same street.

As far as garden boundary dry stone walls go, this was a real challenge and thus required a sturdy process and pace. Apart from the copestones and a few key chunky / strategic stones, the whole build was done using the stones that came out of the original damaged wall.

In general, rebuilding a dry stone wall requires the waller to clear the walling line - real simple if you’re happy to get elbow grease fully committed.

So, I did the following to getting me started:

  • Remove leylandii screen hedge
  • Remove rubble and stone mound while sorting materials into distinct areas (i.e piles of stone, hardcore, metal & plastic)
  • Strip old and very damaged wall
  • Remove shrubs and tree roots which had been growing through the old wall
  • Rescue and relocate a few creatues as seen in gallery.

Perhaps, a key thing to mention about this wall is that in parts a third of it is underground - proper ice-burg, though clearly crafted from lovely reclaimed grit stone.

For more information on process, please feel free to get intouch and I'll be happy to share pictures of what went on and how.
